Networking

If you have more than one computer in your home or your business you might want to consider installing a network. Networking your PCs not only allows your computers to share information and resources, it adds a layer of security that will protect your PCs and your personal or business information.

More and more households have more than one computer. Parents might have a laptop that they carry from work to home or have a desktop PC that they bring home to work on after they leave their business for the night. You may have a desktop that helps you in a home business and one or more others in the household. By installing an inexpensive network you can share information and resources like printers, scanners and other peripherals.

A network is also a security asset, protecting you from unwanted cyber intrusions. Every network is equipped with NAT, or network address translation. NAT sits between your network and the networks in the outside world, protecting your network of computers from being invaded by others. If another computer tries to access yours from outside your network it has to first get permission from NAT. You can set it to deny those permissions to protect your security. Along with your firewall the NAT protects your network from unwanted intrusions.

NAT also lets your single IP address to be used by other computers on your network. Each of your computers will have a single IP address. A good example of this is a business with multiple work stations; instead of each having their own address they have just one, sharing all the resources of your network while protecting them. At the same time, all your computers can "talk" to each other and share files and peripherals like printers and scanners.

Another advantage of having a network is the ability to share resources. Printers are nearly indispensible if you work at home, want prints from your digital camera or need to print out some information from a document or a website. When you have a network, your printer can be shared through a network router via a jack that looks like a phone jack called an RJ-45. By connecting one plug into your router and the other into the printer and then installing a print driver on all the PCs that will be using it you can share the printer. This process is simpler than it sounds as the driver can be found on the installation CD that the printer comes with and also on the manufacturer's website.

If you have a small business, particularly one that is growing, you'll want to consider having a network installed. Rather than emailing a document to the computer that is hooked up to the printer, your employee or partner can easily send the work to the printer directly through the network. You can share resources and save time, trouble and expense.

Many households have more than one PC these days. Kids use it for school and social networking, adults for after business hours work or home business. With a network you can all be connected so that you can share a printer, a fax or other peripheral. With a network, kids can play multi-computer games together and share broadband internet access so that everyone can enjoy top speed and efficiency. If you're tired of having to share one computer or run to another computer to print or scan something, a home network can make your life easier.
